Anne Athena
About
Anne Athena's work is autobiographical and draws upon her life experience and deep interest in human behaviour, spirituality and psychology. The history of humanity and its development and habitation on this planet.
Working within the realms of the figurative, surrealism and symbolism, Anne creates narratives that open a window to the unseen worlds of existence. Her research method is autoethnographic, a concept that deals with the collection of meaning instead of data.
Before studying ceramics, Anne trained as a painter and cites Frida Kahlo, William Blake, Gustav Klimt, Dali, Kurt Weiser and Grayson Perry as important influences. She now combines these skills to create a three dimensional canvas to tell her stories on. Through hand built / thrown vessels and sculptures, hand painted pattern, mark-making, and illustration, Anne employs artistic languages anchored in the taxonomy of ceramic vessels and figures which, since the earliest forms of pottery, have always been used to leave a trail; a narrative of the culture and the people who made them. Through her work Anne Athena continues this tradition as an artist in the 21st century.
Anne Athena, born in Denmark, 1984, holds a BA in ceramics from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen (2014) and a MA in ceramics from the Royal College of Art, London (2019). She lives and works in the UK.
